Dear Fairmount Neighbors,
Please note that because of Thanksgiving Day, our next members meeting will be Thursday, December 3rd. (See the note to the right).
Items of interest that I want to bring your attention to are:
- We will be electing the candidates for the 2010 FCA Board, as provided by the Nominating Committee at the October meeting.
- We would like to initiate a more comprehensive Neighborhood Improvement campaign to include regular clean-ups and litter controls, as well as encouraging repairs and improvements to distressed properties. The distressed properties are mostly in the northwest portion of the neighborhood, but there are isolated eyesore properties throughout Fairmount. Improving the condition of these properties will benefit everyone. If you would like to participate in this effort, please come to the meeting.
- As a follow up from the October FCA meeting, we plan to discuss the city-wide real estate tax issue. Councilman Clarke at the October meeting made it pretty clear that the city will be required to make significant changes to current practice and it will likely mean many tax increases for our neighborhood. Board members would like to gather views of residents and make those views known to the City.
A Benefit for a Friend
As a local business owner and life long member of the community, chances are that you may already know Lisa Reed. This vibrant wife, mother, and friend is the creative genius behind Fleur De Lys, the fun flower and gift shop at 25th and Aspen Streets. What you may not know is that Lisa is currently undergoing treatment for advanced stage lung cancer. In an effort to ease some of the financial burden, friends will be hosting a Beef & Beer fundraiser on November 21 at the Parkway VFW, located at 757 N. 24th Street from 7:00- 11:00PM. Tickets are $25 per person and can be obtained at Take it to the Cleaners, located at 25th & Aspen Streets. Everyone is invited, so please come out and support a wonderful neighbor.
Trees
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) tree planting program in the neighborhood is supported by the FCA, Fairmount CDC, and coordinated by the Fairmount Tree Tenders.
Everyone is now working on the Fall 2009 planting, which will be on Saturday, November 21 at 9AM. To facilitate this planting, we are looking for volunteers to help the Fairmount Tree Tenders. The meeting point will be Ward Park at 24th and Aspen streets. If we get enough volunteers, the work should only take a hour or two. Coffee and donuts will be provided.
As always, Treevitalize forms are available at the FCA meeting. The current applications are for the Spring 2010 planting. If you cannot make the meeting, but are interested in a street tree please check the FCA web site or you could also stop by the Fairmount CDC office on Fairmount Avenue.
Christmas Bazaar-
St. Francis Xavier is holding its annual Christmas Bazaar and "Spaghetti Dinner" on Sunday, November 22 from 10AM to 6PM with dinner served from 2PM to 4:30PM.
Thanksgiving Food Project
Once again, the residents of the west Girard Community Council have organized a Thanksgiving Food Drive in conjunction with St. Francis Xavier and Christian Hope Baptist churches. Please consider making a food or cash contribution to their drive. Contributions can be left at Best in Show Dog Grooming, located at 2708 West Girard.
FCA Membership
Now that the FCA has moved to a rolling 12 month membership cycle, members will be reminded of when they last renewed their membership starting in September 2009, as we run out the memberships that were in sync with the prior September to August cycle. We encourage you to renew your membership when you receive the reminder from Mike DeLorey. If you have not renewed your membership recently, check with Mike at the October meeting and he can tell you if your dues are current.
Farmers Markets
We are fortunate to have two seasonal farmer's markets in Fairmount. Continuing it's 6th season a market is open every Thursday on 22nd Street between Fairmount and Aspen from 3:00PM to 7:00PM running to thru Thanksgiving. A second market has opened at 27th and Girard on Wednesday mornings. Celebrate the return of fresh local produce locally raised meats and cheese and locally baked bread.
Regards
Larry Reynolds, President
