Dear Fairmount Neighbors,
I look forward to seeing you all at our meeting next Thursday (See the note to the right).
Items of interest that I want to bring your attention to are:
Guest Speaker
Darrell Clarke, City Councilperson for our 5th District will be the primary speaker and he will provide updates on city issues as well as take questions from Fairmount residents
Board Nominations
We will be determining the candidates for the 2010 FCA Board, as provided by the nominating committee or as nominated from the floor at the meeting. If you would like to make a difference in the neighborhood. The FCA is looking for committed neighbors to run for positions on the 2010 FCA Board. On average, Board membership requires 8-10 hours a month of time commitment to FCA activities. If you can carve out the time and are interested. Contact the current President, Larry Reynolds (you can reply to this email) and let him know of your interest. It would be great to have some new voices on the Board.
Crime and Safety -
As many are aware, the neighborhood experienced a number of armed robberies on the street in late August and early September. This was a jolt after a very quiet spring and summer. We do not have all the details yet, but our understanding is that there have been some arrests. We will have an update from the 9th District at the October meeting.
A continued reminder- Theft From Auto continues to be a problem in Fairmount . Don't further contribute to this problem by leaving anything of value in your car that could be easily seen by a theft from auto criminal. Most common items taken in this crime include, but are not limited to, portable GPS systems, laptop computers, cell phones and almost anything else of value. Don't become a victim of theft from auto. Also, please advise friends and relatives from out of the city who may be visiting you to not leave anything of value in their car that could easily be seen by a theft from auto criminal. Do not hesitate to call 911 if you see anyone acting suspiciously (i.e. looking in car windows or trying to open car doors)
Trees -
The very successful Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) tree planting program in the neighborhood is supported by the FCA, Fairmount CDC, and coordinated by the Fairmount Tree Tenders. Everyone is now working on the Fall 2009 planting. The Fall planting will be on Saturday. November 21. At last count there are 77 trees scheduled for Fairmount and about 150 total in Fairmount, and the adjacent neighborhoods of
Francisville, and Spring Garden.
To facilitate this planting, we are looking for volunteers to help the Fairmount Tree Tenders. The meeting point will be Ward Park at 24th and Aspen streets at at 9:00 am for refreshments and
planting instructions. Contact Barbara Epstein at bsepstein@comcast.net. If we get enough volunteers, the work should only take a hour or two. So put it on your calendars.
As always, Treevitalize forms will be available at the FCA meeting. The current applications are for the Spring 2010 planting. If you cannot make the meeting, but are interested in a street tree please check the FCA web site.
