Dear Fairmount Neighbors,
- The Fairmount Civic Association (FCA) meeting for this month is scheduled for Thursday, June 25 at 7:30PM with refreshments served from 7 to 7:30. The location, as normal, is the Philadelphia Mennonite High School at 860 N. 24th street (between Parrish and Poplar streets). This is the last scheduled meeting of the FCA until September,
- There are two important FCA business issues on the agenda for the June meeting:
1. An election of the FCA Rep on the Board of the Fairmount Community Development Corporation. The FCA provides three reps for the CDC Board, who serve a three-year term. The election for the current position will be held at the June FCA general meeting. The elected Rep will serve on the CDC Board from July 2009 thru June 2012. Interested individuals should contact any member of the FCA Board to express their interest. The two candidates are Suzzane Low and Sheryl Haynes.
2. A continued discussion and second vote on adopting Robert's Rules of Order for the Association.
3 Heidi Seigel, the newly elected President of FESPP (Friends of Eastern State Penitentiary Park) will give an update on current and future FESPP plans and activities.
· The very successful spring tree planting in the neighborhood took place on Saturday morning April 25 and everyone is now working on the Fall 2009 planting. To facilitate this planting, we are inviting anyone interested in having a street tree planted on their property to attend the meeting and ask questions of the Fairmount Tree Tenders. Treevitalize forms will be available at the meeting. The applications must be submitted by July 10 for the fall planting. If you cannot make the meeting, but are interested in a street tree please check the FCA web site.
· Yards Brewing Co. Presents: Hops and Cops - A Summer Fundraiser As mentioned at the May meeting the FCA is supporting the Sunday June 28 event from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Join Yards Brewing Co. at their new location on the Delaware, as they host a charity benefit for the FOP Survivors Fund. There will be live music, great food and (obviously) some beer. The event will be outside and partially inside will be open to all ages. Tickets are $25.00.
· The FCA has again made cash awards to two graduating students at each of the three schools in the neighborhood.
· There have been some changes to the City's July 4th Parkway that may impact our neighborhood. Primarily, the parade has been moved off the Parkway likely resulting in a later start to Parkway closures, but we will have to see how it works out. In the view of many residents the event was not as disruptive in the last two years, but that may be because the rain reduced the crowds. Given the City's financial situation, police and city services will be stretched thin.
· The Fairmount Farmers" Market has returned for it's 6th season. The market will once again be open every Thursday on 22nd Street between Fairmount and Aspen from 3:00PM to 7:00PM running to thru Thanksgiving. Celebrate the return of fresh local produce locally raised meats and cheese and locally baked bread.
· Please join your neighbors on Saturday, June 20 for the 8th Annual Urban Beach Party sponsored by FESPP. Between 2pm and 9pm on the Brown Street lawn between 22nd Street and Corinthian Avenue, there will be food*, drinks, kiddie pools, volleyball and live music for your enjoyment. New this year is an 8-foot water slide for your cooling and splashing enjoyment (sorry, little kids only, unless you weigh less than 100 pounds!). So come on out, bring your blanket, umbrellas (if it's sunny), family and friends and celebrate the start of summer with us! We'll see you there! *Suggested donation is $10/adult and $5/child
· Thanks to those who participated in the spring cleanup of Bulldog Park at 25th and Fairmount. It really looks great!

Theft From Auto Increases in Fairmount . Although we all welcome the longer hours of daylight and mild weather that spring has brought to us - these conditions may also be a factor that could have contributed to a recent rise in theft from auto in Fairmount. Don't further contribute to this problem by leaving anything of value in your car that could be easily seen by a theft from auto criminal. Most common items taken in this crime include, but are not limited to, portable GPS systems, laptop computers, cell phones and almost anything else of value. Don't become a victim of theft from auto. Also, please advise friends and relatives from out of the city who may be visiting you to not leave anything of value in their car that could easily be seen by a theft from auto criminal. Do not hesitate to call 911 if you see anyone acting suspiciously (i.e. looking in car windows or trying to open car doors) and provide a description of their behavior, age, race, gender, clothing and the direction of their travel.
