Fairmount Civic Association   The Voice of Fairmount

President's Message

Dear Fairmount Neighbors,

As a guest speaker at this month's Member's Meeting, we are expecting our Pennsylvania State Senator Larry Farnese to address the membership. Confirmation of his appearance will be sent out with the pre-meeting announcement later next week.

There are two important FCA business issues on the agenda for the May  meeting:
  1. A second call for candidates to be an FCA Rep on the Board of the Fairmount Community Development Corporation. The FCA provides three reps for the CDC Board, who serve a three-year term. The election for the current position will be held at ourJune FCA general meeting. The elected Rep will serve on the CDC Board from July 2009 thru June 2012. Interested individuals should 'Reply'to this e-mail or contact any member of the FCA Board to express their interest. Hopefully, we will have two strong candidates to present to the membership at the June meeting.
  2. A continued discussion and vote on adopting Robert's Rules of Order for the Association. This vote was postponed to the May meeting.
A substantive change in the Association's bylaws was approved at the April meeting.  Now the annual membership cycle is a rolling twelve-month cycle based on when a member pays their dues. If you have not recently paid your FCA dues, you can do so and it will provide a valid membership for the next twelve months.

The spring tree planting in the neighborhood took place on Saturday morning April 25.  We want to thank the many volunteers who came out to help the Fairmount Tree Tenders and PHS plant on that morning. There were 87 trees planted in the neighborhood. We are already in the process of planning for the fall planting, so please check the FCA web site.

Monday May 25 is the Memorial Day Holiday and Fairmount will again mark the date with a commemoration of the day at Ward Park at 10AM. Please come out and join in the remembrance of the sacrifices of all our veterans, especially those from Fairmount.

The Fairmount Farmers" Market has returned for it's 6th season. The market will once again be open every Thursday on 22nd Street between Fairmount and Aspen from 3:00PM to 7:00PM running to thru Thanksgiving. Celebrate the return of fresh local produce locally raised meats and cheese and locally baked bread.

Tuesday May 19 is Primary Election Day and everyone is encouraged to get out and vote. At the last two FCA general meetings we have had the five Democratic candidates for DA appear and present their positions. Feedback from meeting attendees was that despite the long-windedness of one candidate it was good to be able to see the candidates in person and be better equipped to make a good decision in the voting booth,

Time for the annual spring cleanup of Bulldog Park at 25th and Fairmount. Please join your neighbors in Bulldog Park on Saturday, May 23rd from 9:00AM - 12:00 noon to clean beds, weed and spread mulch.  Sounds like fun, huh?  We look forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting dirty together!  See you on May 23rd!

Theft From Auto Increases in Fairmount . Although we all welcome the longer hours of daylight and mild weather that spring has brought to us - these conditions may also be a factor that could have contributed to a recent rise in theft from auto in Fairmount. Don't further contribute to this problem by leaving anything of value in your car that could be easily seen by a theft from auto criminal. Most common items taken in this crime include, but are not limited to, portable GPS systems, laptop computers, cell phones and almost anything else of value. Don't become a victim of theft from auto. Also, please advise friends and relatives from out of the city who may be visiting you to not leave anything of value in their car that could easily be seen by a theft from auto criminal. Do not hesitate to call 911 if you see anyone acting suspiciously (i.e. looking in car windows or trying to open car doors) and provide a description of their behavior, age, race, gender, clothing and the direction of their travel.
